FOUNDATION OF RYAN CLAN IN AUSTRALIA

The proposal for a Branch Clan had its origins in a Meeting of Ryan Descendants
held in New Farm Park, Brisbane in June 1993 when Ted Ryan outlined investigation
he had made on the matter of the Clan Ryan in Tipperary. The group agreed to
the formation of a Sub-Committee consisting of Ted Ryan, Bernie Ryan and Clarice
McConnell to draw up and consider a set of Rules and then when satisfied to
call a Meeting of Interested Persons to further consider the proposal.
On the 16th. November 1994 a Meeting was convened at 79 Wildey Street, Riverview,
Ipswich, Queensland at the Residence of James Bernard "Bernie" Ryan. The convenor
of the Meeting, Mr. Ted Ryan, explained the position and a proposal was put
that we establish a Branch of the Clan Ryan in Queensland. There was some seventeen
(17) persons in attendance with a further four(4) apologies being lodged from:
Mr. Lawrence N. Shuttlewood, Mackay
Mrs. Alexis Shuttlewood, Mackay (his wife)
Mrs. Donna Farry, Petrie
Mr. Michael Ryan, Sandgate
all of whom were unable to attend because of distance and lack of transport.
Those in attendance were:
Edward W. (Ted) RYAN, Gympie
Bertha M. RYAN, Gympie (his wife)
James B. (Bernie) RYAN, Ipswich
Florence A. (Fay) RYAN, Ipswich (his wife)
Margaret M. FARRELL (nee RYAN), Brisbane
Patrick J. FARRELL, Brisbane, her husband
Ailsa M. HENRY (nee RYAN), Brisbane
James W. HENRY, Brisbane, her husband
Clarice M. McCONNELL (nee RYAN), Brisbane
Alexander P. McCONNELL (Brisbane), her Son
Berniece M. RYAN-CHARLES (nee RYAN), Gympie
Raymond J. GEORGE aka CHARLES, Gympie
Debra A. HENRY-GAETA, Brisbane
Narelle B. THOMPSON (nee RYAN)
Shane B. RYAN, Ipswich
Gregory J. RYAN, Gold Coast
Kerranne A. RYAN, Ipswich
The decision of the Meeting was unanimous in its decision to form a Branch of
the Clan Ryan, and all were in favour of naming it "Clan Ryan (Queensland).
Furthermore, the Meeting unanimously decided to adopt the above Badge as the
Logo for the Branch. Drawings of the Logo which were created by Ted Ryan were
on show at the Meeting. The Meeting then considered the draft of the Rules proposed
by the Sub-Committee and these were adopted with only minor alterations.
It was also resolved that all those persons present at the Meeting and those
who had lodged apologies would be listed in the records as "Foundation Members".
The Meeting then proceeded with an election of Office Bearers which resulted
in the following:

President: Mr. Edward W. (Ted) Ryan
Vice-President: Mr. James B. (Bernie) Ryan
Secretary/Treasurer: Mr. Patrick J. Farrell
Note: Pat Farrell agreed to accept the position for a period of
one (1) year to enable the Branch to become established.
Committee: (3 required)
1. Clarice M. McConnell
2. Berniece M. Ryan-Charles
3. Debra A. Henry
The above would indicate that the Branch was founded with a total Membership
of 21. Since then, the Clan has grown steadily until now in the year
2000 the Membership stands at almost 200. This rise in Membership has
been achieved without recourse to any publicity. The main means of advertising
has been by word of mouth although some gains have been the result of the fact
that the President did have a personal Home Page on the Internet and consequently
did receive a number of enquiries, mainly from Interstate. The outcome of this
has been that although we have so far been unsuccessful in interesting any other
State in establishing Branches in their own States we now have in the Queensland
Branch a significant number of Members domiciled in literally every other State
of Australia. In some States this presence may only be 1 Member
but in some other States it could be as many as 6 or 8 members.
Nevertheless, within the Queensland Branch, the desire is still there to see
Branches established in all States of Australia, and our endeavours will always
be directed towards this goal, with the assurance that on the establishment
of a Branch in a State all present Members of the Clan Ryan (Queensland) domiciled
in that State will be transferred to the new Branch.
Also high on the list of priorities is the desire to see Sub-Branches established
in all Major Cities in each State, to give more opportunities for Members to
participate personally in the activities of the Ryan Clan.
