MOUNTAIN TRIP   22/July/1999   by Mick

We met at the mountain about 9.00 am and enjoyed a leisurely coffee before setting off on an awesome trek.  Our aim was to find a cave, guided by some extremely vague directions and our inner knowings. The going was tough, probably the toughest we have attempted. Thick undergrowth hiding  loose rocks and jagged branches made this a dangerous and energy sapping exercise. We followed the "verbal" directions we had been given, and descended downwards from the carpark. We crossed open areas of solid rock, large "spoon drain" type waterways, and dense scrub. After what seemed to be ages of uncomfortable trekking we came to an open area and rested. I elected to cross another waterway and explore to the south. At this point we realised that were being led astray by the directions we had been given. We were supposed to follow a creek, but here we were, not even halfway down, and quite close to the road, and no creek in sight. At this point I called Graeme over and together we decided to head back upwards to the rock face. This rock face, by the way stretched for some considerable distance and was, in most places, sheer verticle for hundreds of feet!  The going was tough but we made it up.   Joanne and I decided to head back along the face towards the carpark. We worked our way along for some considerable distance, until we found an area which was not so steep. We clambered up like crabs, but alas, no cave. Joanne tested the strength of denim, sliding down, whilst I went back and around to the bottom. We continued on and dipped downwards again to check out the area below the waterfalls. Still no cave. We headed back to the carpark to wait for the others.  We waited for what seemed like ages, before   I headed down the road, stopping here and there to call out. At last a reply!   Elaine called back and told me to come straight up!...   Not in the car!   I yelled that we would see them back at the carpark and returned to wait.
Their revelation upon returning was astounding!  We had been within "spitting distance" of the cave when Joanne and I had turned to the north. Graeme, Denise, Pamela and Elaine had sat for a while, and considered that they should head to the south. Graeme had offered to "check it out" as the others were weary, and he found the cave!  They had asked about entering (there were rocks blocking the entrance) and received a negative, so took photos as best they could.
We were elated!  Chatter over lunch was excited.  Pamela, however was hurting from the effort, as she had previously hurt her ribs, and today's efforts had taken their toll on her. She left after lunch.  Joanne and I decided to go back down and see the cave, while Denise, Graeme and Elaine were going up to the lookout.
Back we went, staying close to the rock face until we found the cave.  I performed an aboriginal "request to enter" ritual and we were granted a "You may".   We removed the rocks and took turns shimmying on our stomachs as far as we could go. The entrance is tiny and the rock ceiling low due to the eons of silt that has filled this cave. We made out some symbols towards the left, and took some photos and notes. We replaced the rocks and returned wearily to the carpark and the remaining trekkers. With hugs all round we departed, not feeling the need to return here....

Mick's Musings

Initial banter on arival was great fun..

I need a new stove........

I think we were sold a "furphy" with the directions, but our "inner knowing" won out !

HARD SLOG !

I had a message that we "had not followed protocol"... We had forgotten to ask permission!

Strange how Graeme & I felt the need to "go up" again.

Glad that Graeme made the discovery........

Pamela picked up on the permission thing !

Great to have the birds around at lunch.....

I received the message that this cave was used "in ancient, ancient times".... Was this the reason that the silt was so high?

The lookout is the absolutely, bestest, most fabulous in Queensland (for us anyway), all of the important mountains in the area are visible from here.....

I fear that I will have some aches & pains from this one!

VERY glad for Pamela, as this confirms one of her early channelings.......
