ater Hazards Apart from being a little wet, Water Hazards are defined by both Yellow and Red stakes. What do they mean?
Yellow: Used to define standard water hazard from which you have two options, both incurring a one stroke penalty. (Example - Hitting over a stream or pond lying across your shots path)
Play another ball from where you last played - (stroke & distance)
Drop a ball as far behind the hazard as you want, keeping the point where the ball last crossed the hazard line between you and the hole.
Red: Used to define a Lateral hazard from which you have four options, all incurring a one stroke penalty. (Example - Hitting beside a stream or pond lying along side your shots path)
The same as above
The same as above
Drop a ball within two club lengths of where the ball crossed the hazard line, no nearer to the hole
Drop a ball within two club lengths of a point on the opposite margin of the hazard the same distance from the hole as where the ball last crossed the margin, no closer to the hole
The above is an excerpt from Australian Golf Digest by John Morrissett, USGA Rules Official
(NB. Should the ball embed on impact when dropping, relief is allowed under Rule 25/2)
And yes, 'through the green' you are allowed to clear any loose impediments from the area in which you are preparing to drop the ball.

Hole in one dreams - Husband and wife Bill and Rae Kachelmier both fulfilled their dreams of a hole in one - on the same day! Bill at Pinehurst GC and Rae at St Maries GC. When Bill excitedly drove to St Maries to tell his wife of his accomplishment, she refused to be one-upped and reported her great deed in return.

Technology Breakthrough.
A Gold Coast golf club has given its patrons an edge on the fairways through satellite technology.
The Hope Island Golf Club has installed a global positioning satellite (GPS) system on its buggies which displays an aerial view of each hole and how far each player's golf ball is from the pin and hazards.
Players can also record their scores on the system and if they hit a birdie or eagle it will reward them with applause.
The GPS system pinpoints a player's ball via the buggy which is parked alongside it.and uses the same technology which enables SCUD missiles and other smart bombs to hit their target. Visual display units in the buggy show the ball's distance to the pin and its position in relation to the tee, sand traps, water hazards, lay-up areas and other golf carts.
Other features include an electronic scorecard and message displays like advertising, weather reports or even the cricket and football scores.
Players can access the history of each hole and use professional tips to play them.
The display units are in either English or Japanese and golfers can also pre-order drinks and food from the clubhouse.

which
club
do I use?
The best tip I ever received was 'Play the percentages'
In other words, use a shorter club from a difficult lie rather than trying to reach the maximum distance you can normally reach from a good lie. And, Practice !!!Beginners - DON'T try to hit the ball too hard.
Practice a smooth swing to get a clean contact with the ball. Swing through the ball, not at it. It will go further than you think. Try a smooth 7 iron and see if I'm not right.
Golf Tips from the Stars
Fuzzy Zoeller - Move up to move on
Amateur Golfers all think they are going to hit their best possible shot but the truth is that they rarely do and so often they are well short of the target. So change the club up. If you think you need to hit a five iron to the green then hit a four instead. How many times do amateurs go through the green with a decently hit shot? Hardly ever, in my experience. So change the club up - and change your luck
(Excerpt from magazine 'Golf Tips from the Stars' - a very good magazine. Visit your Newsagent for your copy)Peter Heiniger - Chip and run
A saviour when it comes to saving shots around the green, it is very similar to playing a long putt with a slightly open stance. To help with the feeling in a chip and run shot, imagine that you're trying to hit the ball under a bench. This will help the ball stay low and continue to run. A seven or six iron is preferred for this shot.
Tom Watson - Putting
Accelerating through the ball is a vital factor for consistant putting. Most putting problems occur when a player decelerates through impact. That makes it hard to keep the clubface square.
Numbered Golf Balls
The numbers on Golf balls are there solely for identification purposes. They have no bearing on the performance of the ball. Some manufacturers record different compression rates, but what number ball you use will have absolutely no effect apart from, perhaps, being a lucky charm.

Perserverance - An anonymous but determined golfer recently recorded a 43 on the 369m par four first hole at Robina Woods GC. (Leaving room for improvement?)
Speed Golf - The Speed Golf Open Championship held in California recently saw Jay Larson confirm his position as the worlds best speed golfer.
He shot an even par 72 in 39 minutes 55 seconds for a score of 111.55, the best ever recorded. He previously held the record at a score of 114.
Scoring is calculated by adding one stroke for each minute on top of the stroke score.Immovable Hazards
Men's Health Magazine in the U.S. has named the most dangerous golf courses in the world.
Top of the list was Gary Player's Lost City in South Africa which has a green fronted by a stone pit filled with crocodiles, giving new meaning to the phrase "a curling 15 footer".
Another to rate a mention was the Elephant Hills Country Club at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, which has fairways marked by craters caused by mortar shells fired across the Zambezi River.

A Question of Etiquette
What do you do when your playing partner says he has found his ball in the rough when you know damn well that he hasn't, because you've got it in your pocket???
"Facts on Golf" ???
In primitive society, when native tribes beat the ground with clubs and yelled, it was called witchcraft; today, in civilized society, it is called golf.
The man who takes up golf to get his mind off his work soon takes up work to get his mind off golf.
Golf was once a rich man's sport, but now it has millions of poor players!
Golf is an expensive way of playing marbles.
The secret of good golf is to hit the ball hard, straight and not too often.
There are three ways to improve your golf game: take lessons, practice constantly -- or start cheating.
An amateur golfer is one who addresses the ball twice - once before swinging, and once again, after swinging. Many a golfer prefers a golf cart to a caddy because it cannot count, criticize or laugh.
Golf is a game in which the slowest people in the world are those in front of you, and the fastest are those behind. Golf: A five mile walk punctuated with disappointments.
There's no game like golf: you go out with three friends, play eighteen holes, and return with three enemies.
Golf got its name because all of the other four letter words were taken.
