The Golden Bear

Jack Nicklaus' amazing record of consecutive majors came to a halt with his withdrawal from the 1998 British Open in July. The Golden Bear had notched up an incredible 146 straight majors from his first year as a professional at the Masters in 1962. Referring to his ailing hip, he said, "After 42 years of playing major championship golf, (includes amateur), I feel that my ability to compete at the highest level on a continuous basis is marginal at best."
(Extract from Golf Australia article)

Jack Nicklaus won 70 times on tour, with 18 majors.
(Thanks for the memories.)

The only left hander to ever win a Major was New Zealands Bob Charles - the 1963 British Open.

Making the Cut

Only seven golfers made the cut in all four majors in 1998.
    Mark O'Meara
    Tiger Woods
    John Huston
    Brad Faxon
    Ernie Els
    Fred Couples
    Phil Mickelson

1998 Tour Horrors

Jose Coceres followed up his first round British Open qualifying score of 74 with a horrendous 105, obviously blowing all chances of qualifying for this years event.
